‘This fast I choose’

Local youth raise money to help famine-stricken brothers and sisters

Fasting is a time-honored spiritual discipline within the church. It helps the participant focus on moral discernment of the issues at hand. Fasting is not simply “not eating.” It is replacing food with renewal and commitment.

Young people in the St. Paul Area and Minneapolis Area Synods are invited to participate in a 30-hour fast to become more aware of famine issues that many people their age face around the world. Every day, 24,000 children die from hunger and disease; 8,000 of those are under age five.

On March 11 and 12, ELCA youth will come together at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Eden Prairie, Minnesota, for the All-Metro Famine Gathering. The event will include speakers, music, comedy, and a joint celebration for all participating congregations.

Churches planning to attend should send a $25 registration fee payable to Saint Phillip the Deacon Lutheran Church, Attn: Jeremy Lahaie, 17205 County Road 6, Plymouth, MN 55447.
