Mount Carmel launches innovative ministry to college students

When students finish high school and begin college they are entering a very formative period in their lives. They are exposed to a lot of outside influences while making important decisions about faith and values. Many experience struggles around the subjectivity of truth, the allure of acceptance by peers, and the temptation to conform.

To offer an alternative for these young adults, Mount Carmel Ministries, a Bible camp and retreat center located on Lake Carlos just north of Alexandria, Minnesota, has begun a program called the Campus Ministry Community (CMC). Mount Carmel has always been a space of grace for families to visit and experience the love and acceptance of God. Its vision, “transforming lives through Jesus only,” which drives Mount Carmel’s commitment to Bible-based teaching, provides the perfect backdrop for helping students develop a Biblical worldview.

CMC is a two-year program combining housing and Christian programming at Mount Carmel with a two-year accredited degree from Alexandria Technical & Community College (ATCC). Students live in newly remodeled, winterized cabins, share meals together in the dining hall, participate in worship and Bible study regularly, and volunteer in the community at least once each month.

During the week these students take classes fulltime at ATCC, ranked as one of the top ten community colleges in the nation. ATCC has a reputation for academic excellence, caring faculty and staff, and small class sizes. In addition to providing exceptional technical degrees for the last 50 years, ATCC now offers the Associate in Arts degree — the first two years of a four-year liberal arts degree.

After two years in CMC, young adults can enter the work force with a technical degree, or transfer to another college to complete a Bachelor’s Degree, with two years of high quality education, faith formation, and servant leadership skills under their belts, all in a very cost-effective manner.

“It’s like combining the Christian atmosphere of living at a small private college while getting a high-quality degree at an affordable cost,” says Patsy Baglien, the dean of students at Mount Carmel. “Our students are growing a deeper understanding of God as revealed in the Bible. This helps them clarify what they believe and why, and become more confident in expressing their faith convictions in a culture that desperately needs Jesus Christ. You can’t get much better than that!”

Scholarships to cover tuition and program fees are available from Mount Carmel.
