The Rev. Ann M. Svennungsen was installed as bishop of the Minneapolis Area Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) at Central Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, on May 6. Svennungsen was elected February 18, 2012, to a six-year term as bishop.

Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson preached at the installation service, and Babette Chatman was assisting minister.

Ecumenical participants included Bishop Brian Prior, Episcopal Church in Minnesota; the Rev. Chaz Ruak, Presbytery of the Twin Cities; Bishop Sally Dyck, Minnesota General Conference, United Methodist Church; and the Rev. Canon Peg Chemberlin, Minnesota Council of Churches.

Svennungsen is the first woman to serve as bishop in any of the ELCA’s six synods in Minnesota.

Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson and Assisting Minister Babette Chatman lead the liturgy.

Hanson extols the congregation to "get up and go" spread the gospel in a hurting world.
