Augsburg College names new campus chaplain
The Rev. Sonja Hagander was recently appointed lead pastor and director of campus ministry for Augsburg College, Minneapolis. Hagander, who has served at Augsburg since 1998, assumes the duties previously held by the Rev. Dave Wold, who retired in May after 30 years as Augsburg’s campus pastor.
According to Augsburg’s President Paul C. Pribbenow, “Pastor Sonja created and sustained the Urban Plunge and has been especially active on and off campus leading a variety of interfaith initiatives, including the Interfaith Scholars and the Interfaith Bridge Building events, bringing youth on campus and into the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood around faith and service.
“I look forward to working closely with Pastor Sonja … as we explore the vision and direction of our campus ministry programs for the years ahead,” said Pribbenow. “We believe that Augsburg is uniquely positioned to model what campus ministry looks like in the 21st century — centered in our Lutheran faith and firmly committed to serving our diverse students, campus community, and neighbors.
In addition, the Rev. Justin Lind-Ayres has been called as associate college pastor at Augsburg. Lind-Ayres has been serving in parish ministry for 10 years, most recently at Bethany Lutheran Church on East Franklin in Minneapolis, just blocks from the Augsburg campus.
Lind-Ayres studied religion as an undergraduate at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, and received his M.Div. from Luther Seminary in St. Paul. In 2012, he received his D.Min. from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, where he studied the power of biblical metaphor in worship and preaching.
Lind-Ayres begins serving the Augsburg campus community on August 19.
