West High School basketball teams triumphant

Over the weekend that most of southern Minnesota was digging out from a snowstorm, the West Lutheran High School Warrior varsity basketball teams were in sunny Phoenix for the 2010 Great Western Lutheran Shootout Tournament. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams brought home championship trophies by winning all of their games against various opponents: Nebraska Lutheran, California Lutheran, Arizona Lutheran, and Evergreen Lutheran.

The games against Arizona Lutheran for both the boys and girls proved to be the most exciting with last second winning shots. “For the boys’team, the first two games were pretty lopsided,” explained West Lutheran coach Steve Jensen. “But the championship game was wonderful — two evenly matched teams, and we just hit the big shot at the right time.”
The coach also told Metro Lutheran that “the girls’ tournament was more of a round robin, and the second game was against the best team.”
Both teams showed poise by winning their toughest matches by two points.
Six players from West were also selected for the all-tournament teams. Riley Gehl, Shea Molitor, and Dustin Barth were selected to the boys’ All-Tournament Team. Megan Steffel, Laura Kolander, and Aimie Weichmann were selected to the girls’ All-Tournament Team.
“This was the fourth year we have gone south for a tournament with other Lutheran high schools,” said Jensen. “We like going to Arizona [during this time of year].”
That said, it was recently announced that the 2011 Great Western Lutheran Shootout Tournament will be held at West Lutheran. Plans will begin soon for hosting the tournament. The school will be looking for volunteers to assist tournament logistics.
