Missionary to India receives honor from seminary there
Dr. James Bergquist, retired ELCA staff member and Twin Cities resident, recently received an honorary Ph.D at the University of Serampore in Calcutta, India. The University annually awards degrees to the graduates of 90 Indian Christian seminaries. At this year’s ceremony there were 1,500 seminary graduates. Bergquist was the speaker at the 2012 graduation.
Bergquist served as a missionary in India early in his career and has been a frequent visiting professor in various Indian seminaries since retirement. He was recognized for 45 years as an ELCA (and predecessor bodies) missionary and leader in Indian theological education, as well as for several books and articles regarding the church and theological education in India.
