Mayer Lutheran High School was honored with the Community Champion Award at the Minnesota Private Schools Awards celebration held in the Anderson Center on the campus of the University of St. Thomas on May 9.
The award was presented to Bonnie Stoeckman and Barb Hoernemann, the leaders of the school’s “Summer Sale,” the annual yard sale that has been held at Mayer Lutheran High School for the past 44 years. For 29 of those years, Stoeckman and Hoernemann have led the event, which raises funds for special school projects.
“We are honored and humbled to receive this award on behalf of the entire Mayer Lutheran High School community,” said Stoeckman in her speech upon receiving the award. “The many volunteers and helpers who support private schools everywhere are true community champions. We are blessed by their support and look forward to seeing everyone again this June!”
“The Summer Sale is a small way to give back to a school that has given so much to our four sons and to our family,” shared Hoernemann. “It is a true labor of love and makes me very happy to see all the good that comes out of the sale.”
The Mayer Lutheran High School Summer Sale raises money for the school’s mission of preparing the next generation of Christian leaders. It also provides shoes for the people of Africa and clothing for people all over the world. The low prices at the sale enable local families to purchase housewares, toys, clothing, tools, and other needed items.
“We are so proud of Bonnie and Barb,” said Joel Landskroener, the school’s executive director. “Their dedication, hard work, and good-natured leadership are a reflection of the faith that burns so brightly in their hearts. … In my book, they are the very best representatives for all those champions in our community who serve their Lord and his people. And, they are the best friends anyone could have!”
The campus of Mayer Lutheran High School, a regional high school open to all students regardless of denomination or worship tradition, is located in historic Mayer, Minnesota, in western Carver County.
