Metro Lutheran Annual Dinner to celebrate “Proclaimed Word”

The 2013 Metro Lutheran Annual Dinner will be held October 13 at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, 50th and Knox, Minneapolis. The theme of the dinner is “Proclaimed Word.”
“Metro Lutheran is a ‘word-y’ institution,” explained the Rev. Michael Edwins, chair of the organization’s Annual Dinner Committee. “And Metro Lutheran engages primarily [in] the printed word.”
Edwins explained that one of his favorite quotations is attributed to St. Francis of Assisi: “Preach the gospel at all times; use words when necessary.” Metro Lutheran tells stories through the means of the printed word, according to Edwins, so that it can be meditated upon and considered carefully, which doesn’t always happen with the more-fleeting spoken word.
The two featured speakers of the evening are both well-known for the printed word. Tom Hegg, author of A Cup of Christmas Tea (with illustrator Warren Hanson), will be the evening’s keynote speaker. In addition to his presentation, he will read from his most recent work, Baby Talk, which will be available November 1, 2013.
Luther Seminary faculty member, the Rev. Dr. Rolf Jacobson, will receive the Gold Pen Award for his contribution to effective public communication on behalf of the church for society. Jacobson has served as editor of Crazy Talk: A Not-So-Stuffy Dictionary of Theological Terms, and was a contributor to The Lutheran Handbook and The Christian Handbook.
